Wow!…Do I have a story for you guys? Yes, yes I do. As most of you know I own a mortgage company, named Movement Financial Group. In short, we hire loan officers and they originate mortgage loans, so people can buy homes, land, commercial property, etc. Let’s get to the story.
It all starts back about 4 months ago. We had a couple of guys come into our office looking to get hired on. While speaking with them I grew to really like one of the two. Unfortunately, they came as a package. They whey had been working together for about 3 years. One was the guy that got the business and was the boss (let’s call him Joel); the other played the assistant role (he’ll be known as Alan). I preferred the boss-man. Let’s move on…
I came into the office one morning about 2 months ago to a nice little story. Apparently they had a huge argument and the whole office heard it. The assistant had a bad temper (as I found out) and had thrown a bunch of stuff around the office, and even at Joel. Joel came to me and apologized and was very embarrassed about the whole situation, but said he cannot work with Alan anymore. I called Alan into my office to talk with him about the situation and figure out what the heck was going on. Alan told the same story as Joel, and admitted he lost his temper, but it would never happen again. I made a judgment call, and fired Alan. I could not allow that kind of behavior in my office. Alan packed up his materials and drove off in his older Ford Explorer.
Here’s where the story gets interesting. Well, I had 3 visitors in my office yesterday. One of them did mostly all of the talking, while all 3 flashed their badges and showed me their guns. They were from the Utah Bureau of Investigations. Basically the FBI on a state level. They started asking me all sorts of questions, and of course I was hesitant to tell them anything until I knew exactly why they were there. The Agent was unwilling to tell me anything. I even asked him to explain what this was all about. He didn’t seem to appreciate that comment as he said to me, “I’ll do the asking right now. Now is my time to ask the questions, you’ll get yours.” Eventually he brought up Alan’s name to me. I told him everything I knew about Alan, which was basically nothing. The Agent finally disclosed why he was looking for him. They had reason to believe Alan was collecting funds from out-of-staters. These funds were being sent to my office, so the Agent said. Unfortunately I have never seen any mail with money in it – it could have made a good Vegas trip for me. There was also reason to believe that he was “communicating with underage children by means of an electronic device.” He kind of disclosed it had something to do with child pornography.
This whole thing makes me sick, although I wouldn’t put it past this guy. He always gave me the willy’s. Had he not been part of the package deal with Joel, he never would have been brought on. It was refreshing to get an opportunity to let him go, and I never thought twice of it. It turns out it was a good decision. Who knows? He probably would have been using the office computers to do that crap. If that had been the case, I probably would have beat his *** myself.
There’s something very overwhelming about having the FBI walk into your office and grill you. The moment they stepped into the door they took over the place. It was like a bad disease had just affected us all. I can’t explain the feeling, but those guys are trained to be recognized and “felt”, that is for sure!
There is a lot more I can tell you, but you get the jist. Give me a call if you’d like to hear more.
